As the petroleum based fuels are on the verge of exhaustion, future transportation needs alternatives. The electric car comes in handy. So an attempt is made to present the basic ideas of an electric car. The relative advantages of electric cars like reliability, non dependence on petrol or diesel, less air pollution etc., and also the disadvantages like higher initial cost, less capacity etc., has also been discussed. Also simple conversion of a gasoline powered car to electric car is also discussed. With more and more new and improved models of electric cars coming up, one could conclude that the road to future is electric. Electric vehicles are vehicles powered by electric batteries and motors that produce zero emissions in transit. Because of a growing concern about green house gas emissions and threat of global warming, electric vehicles are increasingly viewed as offering an alternative to internal combustion engine powered vehicles. The electric motor in an electric vehicle converts electricity, usually from a battery pack, into mechanical power to turn the wheels.Electric automobiles could end the dependence of automobile travel on petroleum in a country like India, which imports most of it's petroleum for its consumption. Heavy taxations on automobile fuel such as petrol, diesel etc., control on air pollution, noise pollution, advancements in batteries etc., will cause for the greatest use of electric automobiles. Already electric cars offer speed sufficient for free way driving, and ranges between battery recharges upto 120 km. So with the upto date advancements, we can use electric cars as secondary cars. Major auto manufacturers are producing high-performance electric vehicles in a wide range of styles and sizes and researchers continue to develop strategies to enhance performance.
