It's many years since I did much exercise apart from walking. I decided that I needed to improve my muscle tone. However, I had no intention of taking strenuous exercise or joining a gym.

A Slendertone machine was the perfect solution for me.

What is it exactly?
This Slendertone machine is a little box about the size of a cassette and it comes with 8 round, rubber pads which are attached by wires to the box. It's battery powered and you get elastic straps to put round your tummy and bottom too. (These hold the pads in place.)

How do you use it?
Wrap the elastic belt round you and position it in the area where you want to improve your muscles. You wet the rubber pads which are attached to the machine by wires, and place them on your 'fat bits'. You then look like an alien with those little round pads and wires coming out of them!

There are full instructions on how to work on certain groups of muscles with the kit. When you switch on electrical impulses go through your muscles.

How does this help?
The small electrical impulses (provided by a battery) which are sent through your muscles cause them to contract. When the impulse stops the muscle relaxes. Thus, you get exercise without having to do anything much.

What does this feel like?
When you first use this device I would recommend that you build up the intensity of the impulse very slowly. At first I found that I needed to use it on a very low setting but after a few days I could turn it up. It is a light, tingling sensation and its really quite pleasant as long as you don't turn it up too high. If you do get too high with the setting it starts to sting and become unpleasant. So, just use it at the level that suits you.

What muscles can I use it on?
This works well on thighs, tummy muscles and bottoms. You can also use it to firm up breast muscles and arms. I used it for tummy muscles and thighs and got noticeable results in about four weeks. You have to keep at it though!

Is there anyone who shouldn't use this?
If you are pregnant you should not use this machine. Anyone with who is diabetic or has a pace maker fitted to their heart shouldn't either. Apart from that its suitable for men and women.

Slendertone Verdict
Easy to use once you get the hang of the mass of wires. Clip it to your waistband and walk around doing something else while this works on you, if you want to. You don't have to make time for these exercises. The battery should last for around 40 hours.

I found the Slendertone system effective but don't expect instant results it takes about a month to see the difference. It's a pleasant experience too!
