abstract
In recent years it has become increasingly important to develop methods for efficient transport of thermal energy from one location to another. Moreover the advent of the space age has stimulated research for heat transfer devices which are light weight and have relatively long life expectancies. The heat pipe is such type of recently developed extremely efficient heat transfer structure. Since its inception it has been used in all fields of technology right from ordinary application of heat transfer such as cooking food to the complicated problems of satellite design. In this work an attempt is made to utilize this high conductance heat transfer device for efficient transfer of solar energy by means of medium temperature heat pipe. For this, the flat plate type of heat pipe is designed fabricated and its suitability as collector is tested. The heat pipe is constructed using glass fabric ( E 0.1 ) type with 60% porosity. Methanol is used as working fluid. Heat pipe is intended to operate between temperature range from 2830 K to 4030 K.
