The Internet A Network of Networks
The Internet is not a monolithic, uniform network; rather, it is a network
of networks, owned and operated by different companies, including
Internet backbone providers. Internet backbones deliver data traffic to
and from their customers; often, this traffic comes from, or travels to,
customers of another backbone (Kende, 2000).
Peering and Transit
During the early development of the Internet, there was only one backbone,
and therefore interconnection between backbones was not an issue.
In 1986, the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded the NSFNET, a
56-kilobit-per-second (Kbps) network created to enable long-distance
access to five supercomputer centers across the country.
X Requirements
X systems are collaborative systems, in that parts of them might reside
on the Internet, an intranet, a client including mobile clients, with each
component interacting with the others.
