Preposition
*ഒരു sentence ലെ Noun/pronoun എന്നിവ അതിലെ Object മായുള്ള ബന്ധത്തെയോ അതിലെ Verbന്റെ ഗതിയെയോ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ Preposition ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.Prepositions മാറുന്നതനുസരിച്ച് Sentence ന്റെ അർത്ഥവും മാറും.
eg. He spoke to me (അവൻ എന്നോടു സംസാരിച്ചു)
He spoke for me (അവൻ എനിക്കുവേണ്ടി സംസാരിച്ചു)
He spoke about me (അവൻ എന്നെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിച്ചു)
He spoke against me (അവൻ എനിക്കെതിരെ സംസാരിച്ചു)
സാധാരണയായി preposition വരുന്നത് , noun/ pronoun എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് മുന്നിലായിരിക്കും. എന്നാൽ ‘the’ യിലുള്ള relative clause ൽ preposition അവസാനമേ ഉണ്ടാവുകയുള്ളൂ.
eg. Here comes the bus that you are waiting for What are you looking for ?
Uses of Prepositions
*വ്യക്തമായ സമയത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ ‘at’ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. eg. Meet me at 5 o' clock.
(night, midnight, noon, dawn, dusk എന്നിവയ്ക്കും at ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.)
എന്നാൽ morning, afternoon, evening എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് മുൻപിൽ
‘in the’ ചേർക്കണം.
eg: She comes here in the morning.
തീയതി/ദിനം എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് മുൻപിൽ ‘on’ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
eg:He will come on Monday
She was born on August 15th 1978.
*മാസങ്ങൾക്കും വർഷങ്ങൾക്കും മുൻപിൽ ‘In’ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
eg. I was born in May
India became Republic in 1950
(in a month, in a year, in three hours)
'For' (കാലയളവിനെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു).
eg. World War II was lasted for more than five years.
Since (കാലബിന്ദുവിനെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു)
eg. I have eaten nothing since yesterday.
തൊഴിൽ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപിൽ 'in’ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
eg: My sister works in a bank
(in an office, in a factory, in a hotel, in a hospital)
*’On' is used if the place of work is not a building
eg: My father is employed on the railway.
(on a farm, on an estate, on a plantation)
Some other uses
ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ കഴിവിനെയോ വൈഭവത്തെയോ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ 'at' ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
eg: Balu is good at English
He is excellent at his work
(clever at, intelligent at, etc)
*“At is used to denote amount, number, price, speed etc. (തുക, എണ്ണം,വില)
eg. She bought apples at Rs. 20 per kg,
The strength of the class is fixed at thirty.
He was driving at sixty miles an hour
*On' is used when a thing is in touch with the surface (പുറത്ത്).
eg. The dog is lying on the floor,
*“Above” (മേലെ ) is used when a thing is not in touch the surface but in a higher position.
eg. The sky is above us
Over' (മീതെ ) is used when a thing covers the surface.
eg. The cat jumped over the fence.
*Under” (അടിയിൽ ) is used when a thing comes within the surface.
eg. The river flows under the bridge.
