desktop streaming

Desktop streaming
on-demand software delivery is a hot topic in the computer world. They can virtualize the local installation and stream the applications -- and even the operating system -- from a central distribution server in real time. The Citrix technologies is using streaming technology to manage the desktop application environments in the company's 300-seat call center. Application streaming technology takes advantage of the fact that LANs are getting faster. , additional application and operating system components are fetched as needed once the system is up and running. As a result of this applications can be maintained and updated on central servers but run on the end user's local machine. self-contained virtual environment in which each streamed application can run has been proposed as the next step.

Speed and Flexibility:
Although preparing applications is time-consuming, application streaming makes updates much faster. It includes a "sequencer" utility that encapsulates all of the system changes that the application's installation routine makes and places those in a semi-isolated virtual environment on the PC, along with the installed application image. Software updates that used to take a month to deploy are now completed in one day. Stream Theory claims to offer application environment virtualization that's more flexible. The DLLs or other application components can be virtualized and which need to talk to one another can be clearly specified.

On-Demand Desktop Streaming

It has been introduced by dell. It stores the user's data on centralized servers and streams that data to a local computer ie, virtually diskless as the user logs on to the system. This keeps the data secure without disturbing the end user's PC experience. This solution is particularly well suited to employees who work on a local area network (LAN). Users complete their work on local computers and then save all of it back to the remote server. This technology enables local computers to start up and run from a boot-image file stored on a server. Each time a user initiates a working session, the On-Demand Desktop Streaming process delivers a standard desktop to the client computer. It managers can easily update/deploy the desktop images to the client environment. The other benefits of desktop streaming are:
-Improved virus resistance: a pristine desktop image is served to the client computer each time a user logs on a working session.
-Reduced desk-side support: system startup resolves many instances of potential corruption as there are fewer disk images to deal with.
-Streamlined management
-Longer image life cycles:They have life 1.5 times the lifetime of a standard desktop.
-Seamless migration: Migration to a higher OS requires only one update to the image master on the remote server.

Hi,
this is a good pdf about desktop streaming:

Even if you can't download it, click on quick view to view it in Google docs. I had trouble downloading it.
