Mkoba Teachers College is a unique primary teacher education institution located in the City of Gweru, in Zimbabwe. It was officially opened on 10 June 1978, having started tuition programmes in 1976. It was the first Primary Teachers College to be granted University of Rhodesia Associate College status. The establishment of the college was a result of the colonial government s new policy regarding African teacher education . The then Ministry of Education through its Division of African Education adopted the following tenets:
To produce 1 000 primary school teachers every year so as to staff schools with well trained teachers. The inception of Mkoba Teachers College was to contribute towards the realisation of the 1 000 teachers produced per year.
To provide first class facilities for such training.
To site colleges in the vicinity where trainee teachers could carry out teaching practice.
To provide all the facilities required in an African environment
To produce an academically sound, dynamic, resourceful, innovative and professionally dedicated teacher.
Mkoba Teachers College was to be the first primary teachers college planned and built by the then Ministry of Education to meet these requirements. Mkoba was thus a blue print for future primary school teacher training colleges.
