It's not likely to happen this general election but non-resident Indians (NRIs) may soon be able to cast their ballot, even if they're not back home. The Election Commission of India (EC) is considering a proposal to allow this following many representations made by expatriate Indians.
Currently, NRIs can only vote in their constituencies. This regulation is seen as restrictive as only 11,844 Indians living abroad have registered as voters, the maximum being from Kerala. Of these, barely anyone has traveled to the country to exercise his or her franchise.
