Application of Self-Phased Array Antennas to Mobile Communications
A self-phased array antenna which employs a pilot signal can be used as a method for reduction of upto 1-2 orders of power of base station and mobile unit transmitters in mobile communication systems. talk time increase and the reduction of battery weight are other advantages of this method. electromagnetic and ecological compatibility problems are a major concern as many number of towers are being setup for mobiles. base stations output power can
reach upto 5-10 kW. and the mobile devices reach upto 0.5-5W. a person s head absorbs half of the radiated power.
The use of selp phased array antenna
reducing the power radiated by mobile
communications system transmitters can be a solution to the above mentioned problems .The size of
service areas of mmobile systems may retain their original size if microcelluls are used and also if
sensitivity of the receivers is increased or antennas gain
is expanded. increase in
sensitivity of receivers may not be possible since this value is close to the limit. Gain of the antenna also cannot be increased. The use of directional antennas for base stations is th emost promising approach in the present condition.A self- phased array antenna, which automatically forms the main lobe in the direction of the received signal. This facilitates signal reception and signal re-radiation in the same direction.
