Security Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks

Characteristics of WMN
Security Challenges in WMNs
Securing WMNs
Conclusion

Difficulties in Providing Security in WMNs

Shared Broadcast Radio Channel
MAC layer Eavesdropping or replay attack
Lack of Association
Authentication
Physical Vulnerability
Mesh router replacement
Limited Resource Availability
Differentiate mesh router and client
Communication overhead
Possible Attacks in WMNs

External Attack
Launched by intruders who are not part of a WMN and try to gain illegitimate access to the network.
Encryption and authentication.
Internal Attack
Launched by the nodes that are part of a WMN, such as the selfish nodes or the malicious nodes that have possibly been compromised by attackers.
Have access to all the keying and authentication information.
Cooperative mechanisms that help detect and isolate the misbehaving nodes need to be employed.

Typical MAC Layer Attacks

Eavesdropping
Keep the copy of the data
Leads to the compromise in data confidentiality and data integrity.
Link Layer Jamming Attack
Transmit regular MAC frame headers with no payload on the transmission channel, which conform to the MAC protocol
Leads to DoS or energy depletion for the legitimate nodes

MAC Spoofing Attack
Eavesdrop on the network to determine the MAC addresses of legitimate devices and masquerade as a legitimate user
Leads to illegal access or DoS
Replay Attack
Copy or eavesdrop data between two nodes and then transmit these legitimate messages at a later stage to masquerade as a legitimate user
