JOINT WRITTEN PROJECT PLAN AND DESIGN COMMENTS

1. ASSIGNMENT
The project assignment was delivered by Stephen Northcutt on August 21:
Your topic will be perimeter convergence. In the past firewalls, VPN concentrators, IDS/IPS were hosted on separate devices. Today, Cisco ASA, IBM (formerly ISS) multithread appliance and others give you the same level of protection as individual systems. A recent paper from other students discusses this from a rapid response position: http://sans.edu/resources/student_projec...07_001.doc
Your written assignment is to research and decide whether you feel this write up above is correct in terms of sound architectural design. If not, create your own statement. Then focus the majority of your effort on the critical features you would expect from a converged perimeter device, how you would select such a device and most important, your approach to testing the device before installing it in production. Please list the tools and methodology you would use to test. The tests you select should validate the critical features you expect to find on such a device.
Keep in mind that the project management aspect of this assignment is as important as the technology and research. Meet with your partner to discuss, then you will submit a summary of your discussions and a project plan that explains who does what and when.
After submitting the summary of your discussions and a project plan you may optionally ask for feedback from the person that assigned you the project (Assigner: Stephen Northcutt, [email protected]) to see if you re generally on track.
Then you will be creating a short presentation (generally it is 10 powerpoint content slides with Notes - dealing with the important, meaty material; NOT title slides, agenda slides, etc.). You will be able to obtain feedback during the process by e-mail/phone with the person who assigned the topic, and a draft presentation may be submitted for feedback.
Time to complete is 30 days after the topic is assigned. The grade will be a group grade. (In the unlikely event that one of the partners is not carrying his load, the other partner can contact us for discussion).
