Voice Over Internet

In order to develop a high quality real time voice transmission system using VoIP, reliability and predictability are two major problems. Reliability ensures the reliable delivery of voice packet so that loss is concealed from user, whereas predictability avoids the delivery of voice packet with excessive delays and to maintain the certain playback rate. These requirements can be measured by quality of services (QoS) measure. The key QoS measure includes the end-to-end delay, jitter and loss. Jitter is a time difference between packets expected arrival time and packet actual arrived time. End-to-end to delay and jitters are key measurements of predictability, whereas loss is the key measures of reliability. Obviously, reliability is a more urgent problem to be handled because without reliability, predictability is hard to achieve.
It is found that if the voice transmission were implemented using IP, it would be more economical and has a wider scope of implementing voice conferencing like applications. Here we will try to examine the necessary components of Voice over IP system.
