What Is a Radio Engineer?

Essential Information

Radio engineers, also called radio frequency engineers, are specialized electrical engineers who work with devices that emit and receive radio waves. These devices are found on wireless networks, as well as in items such as radios and cell phones. The main duties of these professionals include maintenance, monitoring and repair of broadcasting systems and equipment. Education requirements vary, but a degree may be required. Radio engineers generally need to be licensed, though certification is voluntary.

Radio Engineer Licensing

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) all states required engineers who provided public services to be licensed as Professional Engineers (PE) (bls.gov). To become a PE, engineers must have four years of work experience and pass a state PE exam. Most beginning engineers will take this exam in two stages. The first stage involves taking a Fundamentals of Engineering exam and acquiring the necessary work experience. The second stage consists of taking the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam.

Certification

The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) offers a voluntary certification for radio engineers. Candidates for the Certified Broadcast Radio Engineer (CBRE) title must have five years of broadcast or radio engineering experience and pass an exam that covers AM/FM procedures, problem solving and theory (sbe.org). The CBRE certification comes with continuing education requirements and may help with advancement to senior positions.

Employment Outlook

Employers of radio engineers include government, telecommunications and broadcast companies. While the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not offer specific employment growth data for radio engineers, it does offer information about related fields. For instance, the BLS predicted that broadcast and sound engineering technician jobs would grow by 9% from 2012-2022, while employment of electrical engineers was only predicted to rise by 5% (bls.gov). Additionally, PayScale.com reported that radio frequency engineers earned a median annual salary of $78,967 in September 2014.

Audio engineering is a technological field that deals with various aspects of technology associated with sound and audio devices. This field is one of the important fields and that is the reason that there are various kinds of courses offered in this field. B.Tech in Audio engineering is a bachelor s level degree which contains detailed study of various principles involving sound and audio devices in it.

Under the course of B.Tech in audio engineering, one studies about the technology behind the different kinds of audio devices. The ways to enhance their deliberating quality and their amplification is also a part of this course. Under this course, one also studies the various devices and the way in which the sound is deliberated. Study of various kinds of audible and electronics devices is also an important part of this course.

One needs to be at least 10 + 2 passed in order to be eligible for this course of B.tech in Audio Engineering. The 10 + 2 passing certificate should be of a well recognised educational board of India. One also needs to qualify the entrance examination that depends on the college, and on the examination conducting body that conducts the examination.

Course Outlook:

The course duration of this bachelor level course in audio engineering is 4 years. These 4 years are generally divided in to 8 semesters of 6 months each. However, some universities may vary in their course duration.

Job Prospects:

There are plenty of jobs in the market for the B.Tech in audio engineering degree holders. An electronic company like Sony, Videocon, Bose, Samsung etc recruits these degree holders and pays a handsome amount as salary.

Hi,
This is Iftiza Ahmed. The book "Radio Engineering" by GK Methal is very much needed by me for my class presentation. My selected topic are given in brief there. But unfortunately I don't have the hard copy or the soft copy of the book. So if you guys can help giving me the soft copy of the book it would be a great help.
