Advancing the State of the Art in Flight Simulation
#1

Abstract

Recent advances in synthetic environment (SE) technology provide the opportunity to develop flight simulators that immerse the pilot in a stereoscopic, three-dimensional world. The first year activities were highly successful in establishing the feasibility of providing a 3D synthetic environment to a pilot. The current year activities are to build on the existing infrastructure, to improve the flight dynamic and environmental models, to incorporate a flight control system model, and to further develop the 3D virtual cockpit graphics library. We believe this remarkable new device will provide valuable insight into the future advances of flight simulation. A review of the current capabilities and proposed future research objectives will be highlighted.

Introduction

cCommercial, military, and government organizations commonly employ aircraft flight simulation technology to perform a variety of aircraft operational tasks. Specific tasks can be classified as belonging to one of three broad categories; aircraft flight and operation training tasks, aircraft analysis and evaluation tasks, and advanced aircraft flight research tasks. The first two categories employ flight simulation of existing aircraft while the third category attempts to simulate the flight of new aircraft designs.o. uld have the same spring characteristics as a et.
