Application Of Ferro-cement In Contruction

INTRODUCTION

Ferro-cemnt is a relatively new material consist of wire meshes and cement mortar.
Developed by P.L.Nervi,an Italian architect in 1940.
Widely used due to the low self weight, lack of skilled workers,no need of framework etc .
Quality of ferrocement works are assured because the components are manufactured on machinery set up and execution time at work site is less.
Maintenance cost is low.
Ferro-cement construction has come into widespread use only in the last two decades.

What is Ferro-cement?

Highly versatile form of reinforced concrete.
Its a type of thin reinforced concret construction,in which large amount of small dia wire meshes uniformly through out the cross section.
Mesh may be metal or suitable material.
Instead of concrete portland cement mortar is used.
Strength depends on two factors quaility of sand/cement mortar mix and quantity of reinforcing materials used.

Constituent Materials

Cement
Fine Aggregate
Water
Admixture
Mortar Mix
Reinforcingmesh
Skeletal Steel
Coating

Advantages

Basic raw materials are readily available in most countries.
Fabricated into any desired shape.
Low labour skill required.
Ease of construction, low weight and long lifetime.
Low construction material cost.
Better resistance against earthquake.

Disadvantages

Structures made of it can be punctured by collision with pointed objects.
Corrosion of the reinforcing materials due to the incomplete coverage of metal by mortar.
It is difficult to fasten to ferrocement with bolts, screws, welding and nail etc ..
Large no of labours required.
Cost of semi-skilled and unskilled labours is high.
Tying rods and mesh together is especially tedious and time consuming.

Ferro-cement Construction

Fabricating the skeletal framing system.
Applying rods and meshes.
Plastering.
Curing

Applications

Housing.
Marine.
Agricultural.
Rural Energy.
Anticorrosive Membrane Treatment.
Miscellaneous.

Cost Effectiveness Of Ferro-cement Structures

The type of ecnomic system.
Type of applications.
Relative cost of labour.
Capital and local tradition of construction procedure.
Doesn t need heavy plant or machinery.
Low cost of construction materials.

CONCLUSION

Ferro-cement come into wide spead use only in the last two decades and still in its infancy.Sufficient design information is available and adequate field experience has been acquired to enable safe design and construction of many types of ferro-cement structures.
Whether it can economically compete with alternate materials depends on the type and location of application.
For industrially developed countries,ferro-cement seems economical for medium storage tank.roof shells, boat, tank and the ease of forming complicated shapes and lighter weight of ferro-cement can be safely exploited.

ABSTRACT

A large number of small crafts such as barge, fishing vessels, supply vessels, passenger boats, jankar etc. are operating at Cochin. The existing slipway dry-docks are not sufficient to carryout the repair and maintenance of the ever increasing number of crafts. The constraints such as availability of land, soil conditions, cost of land etc. lead to the design of floating dock for repair and maintenance of small vessels. At present the most popular material used for the construction of such dock structures is steel. But the high corrosive cost of steel is also high. Hence it was decided to adapt a less expensive material for the construction of this floating dock.
The building material, Ferro cement is already found very much suitable for boats, crafts, tanks etc in many countries. The aim of present thesis is design and analysis of a floating dry-docks based on Ferro-cement construction. The mechanical properties of this material are discussed in this these. The designed dock serve flat bottom barges up to 300tons light displacement and self propelled vessels such as fishing boats, passenger boats, jankars, supply vessels etc. having maximum displacement of 300 tons. The analysis of the dock is carried out in the transverse and longitudinal directions. The methods such as intermediate beam analysis, beam on elastic foundation analysis etc are used here. Finally the strength of the structure is checked for safety.
