self compacting concrete
#1

Concrete is the most used construction material in the world and if correctly composed, it can be vary durable and thus save considerable society resources in maintenances cost. Self-compacting concrete is one of the subjects of concrete technology and the various investigations have been carried out and hence the concrete has been used in practical structures. In this paper, a brief introduction to self-compacting concrete (SCC) is given. And also the definition and motive for development of SCC have been discussed. The SCC has some advantages over normal concrete and also some disadvantages. An approach has been made to study the various aspects of SCC, such as types of SCC, materials used and testing methods, in detail. The paper also touches the economical considerations, applications and future development of SCC. A concrete that places itself - SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE A well-proportioned SCC can flow under it s own weight through & around congested reinforcement filling forms completely & producing a void free mass with no vibration and without segregation problems. When large quantity of heavy reinforcement is to be placed in RC member it is difficult to ensure that the formworks get completely filled with concrete that is fully compacted without voids of honeycombs. This problem can now be solved with self-compacting concrete. Self-compacting concretes is placed or poured in the same was as ordinary concrete but without vibration. It is very fluid and can pass around obstructions and fill all the nooks and corners without the risk of either mortar or other ingredients of concrete separating out. At the same time there are no entrapped air or rock pockets. This type of concrete mixtures does not require any compaction & it saves time labor energy. The surface finish produced by SCC is exceptionally good and patching will not necessary. This concept of SCC was followed by a major European R & D projects. SCC has been successfully used in France, Denmark and Netherlands & UK apart from Japan. It is gaining wide acceptability because no noise pollutions there & the construction process is safer and more productive.

Self compacting concrete (SCC) represents one of the most significant advances in concrete technology for decades. SCC can be described as a high performance material which flows under its own weight without requiring vibrators to achieve consolidation by complete filling of formworks even when access is hindered by narrow gaps between reinforcement bars. SCC can also be used in situations where it is difficult or impossible to use mechanical compaction for fresh concrete, such as underwater concreting, cast in-situ pile foundations, machine bases and columns or walls with congested reinforcement. The high flow ability of SCC makes it possible to fill the formwork without vibration.
Self-compacting concrete is a fluid mixture suitable for placing in structures with congested reinforcement without vibration. Self-compacting concrete development must ensure a good balance between deformability and stability. Also, compactability is affected by the characteristics of materials and the mix proportions; it becomes necessary to evolve a procedure for mix design of SCC. This project consists of: (i) development of a suitable mix for SCC that would satisfy the requirements of the plastic state; (ii) casting of concrete samples and testing them for compressive strength.
This project presents the experimental procedures for the design of self-compacting concrete mixes. The test results for acceptance characteristics of self-compacting concrete such as Slump flow, Slump flow at T50cm, V-funnel and L-Box are presented. Further, compressive strength at the ages of 7 and 14 days was also determined and results are included here. The SCC trials1 to 5 mixes got less strength SCC mixes, which are not useful for most of the constructions. The proportions for SCC trials 6 to 8 mixes got required strengths satisfying all the properties of Self-Compacting Concrete which can be easily used for the development of medium strength self-compacting and for further study.
