Experimental Investigation on use of Pond ash and Stone dust as partial replacement of fine aggregate in cement concrete.
Experimental Investigation on use of Pond ash and Stone dust as partial replacement of fine aggregate in cement concrete.
Introduction
The power required of the country is rapidly increasing.
The annual consumption of coal in the country for electrical power generation is 300MT.
Thus as a result more than 110MT coal ash is being generated every year, which leads to degradation of land.
As per survey conducted by National Power Corporation around 20,000 Hectares of land is occupied by ash ponds .
About Pond ash :
The pond ash is a waste product from most of coal based thermal power plants.
As the accumulation in the pond ash (PA) around the thermal power plant is posing threat to environmental, its proper management is becoming essential.
It is found that it is possible to replace some percent of sand by pond ash as fine aggregate in concrete without compromising on strength and durability.
Material and Methodology
In this research work, the India standard method of concrete mix design (IS:10262:1982).
The physical and chemical characteristic of cement confirms BIS 12269:1987.
Coarse aggregate : 20mm and 12mm nominal size.
Fine aggregate : Locally available sand + pond ash + stone dust in different proportions
Cement : 53 grade opc.

Laboratory test for determination of specific gravity, water absorption & moisture content of F.A
Observations
The concrete cube of size 150 x 150 x 150 mm, six numbers for each proportion are prepared as per BIS procedure and tested in compression testing machine (CTM).
The result of density and compressive strength tests after 7 days & 28 days curing as shown below tables.

Graphical comparison of strength
Advantages
By using pond ash in cement concrete, we can reduce the cost of concrete with out compromising the strength.
This concrete is more useful in the areas were the cost of sand is expensive.
By utilizing dumped pond ash we can protect the hectors of land from degradation.
Compressive strength is high compared to the conventional mix
Conclusion :
The density of concrete mix decreases with increase in percentage of pond ash. It is evident that density decreases by 7.85% for 60% pond ash as compared to 0% pond ash.
It is evident that compressive strength increases by 7.08% (28days) corresponding to pond ash 50%.
It is found that it is possible to replace some % of fine aggregate with Pond ash in cement concrete with out compromising on strength and durability.
