Sound Source Localization in meeting room

NEW DIRECT APPROACHES TO ROBUST SOUND SOURCE LOCALIZATION

Yong Rui and Dinei FlorencioMicrosoft ResearchOne Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA 98052

ABSTRACT
When more than two microphones are used, the traditionaltime-delay-of-arrival (TDOA) based sound source localization(SSL) approach involves two steps. The first step computesTDOA for each microphone pair, and the second stepcombines these estimates. This two-step process discardsrelevant information in the first step, thus degrading the SSLaccuracy and robustness. Although less used, one-stepprocesses do exist. In this paper, we review these processes, create a unified framework, and introduce two new one-stepalgorithms. We compare our proposed approaches againstexisting 1 and 2-step approaches and demonstrate significantlybetter SSL performance.

SOUND SOURCE LOCALIZATION FOR CIRCULAR ARRAYS OF DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONES

Yong Rui, Dinei Flor ncio, Warren Lam,and Jinyan Su Microsoft CorporationOne Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA, USA

ABSTRACT
Previous research in sound source localization has helpedincrease the robustness of estimates to noise and reverberation.Circular arrays are of particular interest for a number ofscenarios, particularly because they can be placed in the centerof the sources. First, that improves the sound capture due to thereduced distance. Second, it helps on the direction estimation, not only because of the reduced distance, but also because itincreases the angle differences. Nevertheless, most research oncircular arrays focused on the case of omni-directionalmicrophones. In this paper we present a new algorithm for soundsource localization developed specifically for directionalmicrophones. Results obtained from real meeting room setupsshow a typical error of less than 3 degrees.
