The Kerala Electrical & Allied Engineering Co. Ltd., popularly known as KEL was established in 1964 in the State of Kerala, India and is fully owned by the State Government. As a company engaged in multifarious activities, it has gradually broadened its manufacturing base strategically to reach a wider domestic and overseas market. The company has four manufacturing units located in various districts of the State. They are Kundara Unit in Kollam district, Mamala Unit in Ernakulam district, Olavakkod Unit in Palakkad district and Kasargod Unit in Kasaragod district. The Kundara unit manufactures brushless alternators which are mainly used in railway coaches for producing electricity. The Mamala unit is engaged in the manufacturing of medium power distribution transformers. The Olavakkod unit manufactures the circuit components such as fuse switches, change over switches, porcelain fuse units and cutouts. The Kasargod unit manufactures general purpose Brushless alternators of 15 kVA to 1500 kVA. The Kundara Unit in Kollam district was started up in the year 1964. This division manufactures the brushless alternators. Brushless Alternators are of inductor type. They are used in railway coaches for supplying loads like lights, fans and for charging automobile batteries. These alternators are 3f homo polar generators without any commutators, slip-rings and sliding contacts (brushes). Brushless alternators are of two types:- ? Brushless alternator with stationary armature winding and stationary field winding. ? Brushless alternator with stationary armature winding and rotating field winding.
