Fibre reinforced mud brick as a buiilding material
#1

Earth has been used in the construction of shelters for thousands of years and a major part of the population depend on it for building their shelter. The fibres, which are connected together by mud, provide a tensile strength in mud bricks.better coherence between the mud layers is provided by the mud bricks. The fibre reinforced mud brick has better compressive strength than the conventional fibreless mud brick. The fibres helps to preserve the shape of the brick and also the the regions near the surface won't get crushed or fall off. The elasticity of the mud brick is alsp increased by the presence of the fibres. The distribution of the fibres being arbitrary, the tensile strength and the elasticity of the mud bricks improve. Fibre reinforced mud brick design practice has been concerned with providing ductility to members deforming inelastically.

Experimental program
Materials:
Cemetn, basalt, pumice, lime and gypsum were used as stabilisers.
plastic fibres and polystyrene fabric were used as fibrous materials
and water was added as the lubricant..

Process operation:
Mixing operation:
three different
specimen groups were obtained by varying the proportion of the components and mixed thoroughly in dry state.

brick preparation:
150x150x150mm bricks were formed. At at 1/3 and 2/3 heights, fibers were placed and was properly compacted on a vibration table.

Abstract
An earthquake resistant high strength material has been sought. It was concluded that the interface layers of fibrous materials increased the compressive strength and a certain geometrical shape of these layer materials gave the best results. The mix proposed satis?es the minimum compressive strength requirements of ASTM and Turkish Standards.

The materials used in this study for ?bre reinforced mud brick production were clay as main matrix; cement, basaltic pumice, lime and gypsum as stabilisers; straw, plastic Fibres and polystyrene fabric as ?brous materials and water as lubricant.
