Since, JAVA applet is suitable for both the drawings and strings, all these applications can be put together by developing a single JAVA applet program. The java code that we will develop will also be be installed on the pen so that the processor in the pen will and and type the able to draw desired text on the display panel.
Applet:
Applet is a function of java which for example, is a kind of container (file) which contains a set of programs made in java. Java is a high level language. It is widely used in making various application Based on java. It is one of the best features of java. The various strings, drawings etc will be made using a class file and this file will not be a single file. It will be a set of files linked together in a single Database: The system installed in the pen will consist of a database which will help the processor to recognize various words made visually in the air. Each word written in the air will resemble to a word in the database and the word present in the database will be printed. This will remain the basic principle of the working of a smart note taker.

4. SMART PEN
The Smart Pen is a device that resembles a fat pen or stylus, but contains a tiny computer and a set of sophisticatedsensors that record and analyze every motion, and then transmit this information to a nearby computer via infrared, radio or directelectric signal .A Smart Pen helps a computer to recognize handwritten or drawn input. A computer is treated as 1 level of Complexity higher in its ability to recognize the handwriting of anybody who uses a Smart Pen. Costs $50, weight is negligible.
5. SOLO PEN
This is a progressive development of the Smart Pen: a pen with sufficient processing power to recognize handwriting on its own with the equivalent of Complexity 1. It can also be used as a Smart Pen. Every Solo Pen has a long, narrow screen that displays the writing for the user to check. The user of a Solo Pen can write on a regular writing surface, as the Solo Pen has a normal writing tip. TL8 Solo Pens have trouble with the spatial relationship of writing, so if the user writes three lines on paper and then wants to write a heading above the first line, the Solo Pen might put it a line higher or lower than desired. The user can also write in the air, but this requires an IQ roll to avoid mistakes. TL8 Solo Pens are great for short notes on the run, not for novel writing.
TL8 Solo Pens can be used in a Virtual Reality environment. The pen continually transmits its location to the VR manager, which displays the writing in the virtual environment. The data is stored and downloaded to a computer via infrared.
A Solo Pen is TL8, costs $100 and has negligible weight. It has a rechargeable A Power Cell, but do not bother about energy as long as the Pen is placed into its recharging stand (comes with the pen).
More advanced versions are possible:
The TL9 Solo Pen has Handwriting Recognition equivalent to Complexity 2 and as no problem with spatial relationship. It has a built-in cellular phone that transmits text as fax or e-mail, or directly to a nearby computer (cost $100).
The TL10 Solo Pen has a small store of nanomachines that drop from the tip onto the surface, leaving a trail like ink so the user can see what he is writing or drawing. The nanomachines react to corrections, that is, if the user inserts a word, the nanomachine writing will make space for the new word as if it were a line in a text processor. The nanomachines can be recalled to the Solo Pen (takes 30 seconds per page). An Ink Bug can be placed on the paper to follow the Nanomachines and print for real.
A single Solo pen contains enough nanomachines for 10 pages and a refill costs $10.
A TL10 Solo Pen has Handwriting Recognition equivalent to Complexity 3 and costs $200 ($50 without nanomachines)

How does it work?

The Smart Pen optically records pen movements over a grid-enhanced paper CRF. Its mini camera captures stylus activity 100 times per second. Pen storage capacity can range to over 250 CRF pages. When docked, the pen (which is recharged while in the dock) initiates a connection to the PC. After a start prompt and the username and password are entered, data from the pen are automatically sent over the Internet to a secure Health Decisions server. The Smart Pen is one of several data entry options available from our integrated clinical trials system.Health Decisions takes the best technology and applies it to your clinical trials. That's how it should be done. Knowing what is going on in the field is limited by how quickly data are collected and transmitted. The Smart Pen system, a data entry option of Health Decisions integrated Clinical trials Management System, establishes a new standard for ease of use in sites and speed of data tanmission. The Smart Pen system includes the Smart Pen and a pen cradle connected to an internet-enabled computer. As CRFs are filled out, the Smart Pen records each stroke. It identifies each CRF and where it is on the page through a very fine grid pattern that appears as a light gray background shading on the CRF. The Pen is then placed in the cradle, activating a password-protected Internet page link to Health Decisions. Data are interpreted into fields and validation can occur immediately, with queries returned to sites quickly over the Internet. The process also creates an exact copy of the original CRF that can be read for notation and comparison with interpreted data fields.Health Decisions takes the best technology and applies it to your clinical trials. The digital pen captures the user s handwriting. By itself, the pen works like a regular ballpoint pen. When you use it with digital paper, you now have the added benefit of an electronic copy of the completed paperwork as well as a hardcopy backup. The ExpeData solution works with pen hardware from leading manufacturers both in a docking version where you need a PC to upload data and a Bluetooth version, which is paired with a Bluetooth cell phone.Pens are very durable and can hold up to 100 pages .
6. EXPEDATA DIGITAL PEN

For those who have never progressed past the hunt-and-peck method of typing, British Telecommunications' research laboratory has come up with a prototype of an intelligent pen that records writing and translates it into text on a computer screen. Dubbed SmartQuill, the sleek and stylish prototype pen is different from other electronic pens on the market today in that users don't have to write on a special pad in order to record what they write. Instead, SmartQuill contains sensors that record movement by using the earth's gravity system, whether you write on paper or in the air. SmartQuill isn't all space age, though -- it contains an ink cartridge so that users can see what they write down on paper. "Why should people use a keyboard when they can use a pen?" said John Collins, project manager for SmartQuill at BT Labs. Many people have never learned to type quickly and accurately, but everyone knows how to write, he pointed out. People could use the pen in the office to replace a keyboard, but the main attraction will be for users who usually take notes by hand on the road and type them up when returning to the office, Collins said. SmartQuill will let them skip the step of typing up their notes, he said. The pen works in conjunction with a regular PC; onto which users install special handwriting recognition software developed by BT Labs, Collins said. The lab has several SmartQuill models in the works, including one that communicates with the PC via a radio transmitter, but the current prototype hooks up to a PC via a cable and electronic docking station called an "inkwell." It can also be connected to printer or modem. Users write down notes in their regular handwriting and the movements are stored within SmartQuill. Up to 10 pages of notes can be stored locally on the pen, Collins said. Once the pen is hooked up to the computer, the handwriting recognition software translates the movements into text on-screen. Unlike many handwriting recognition programs, the SmartQuill system analyzes movements instead of shapes, Collins said. This allowed BT to get rid of the electronic notepad associated with most computer pens. SmartQuill contains a few local applications such as an address book, daily planner, and calculator. Users can enter information into these applications by pushing a button on the pen and writing down what they would like to enter, Collins said. There is also a small three-line screen to read the information stored in the pen; users can scroll down the screen by tilting the pen slightly, he said. Future models could receive e-mails and pager messages via a wireless messaging system and could use digital signature recognition for security purposes. BT is hoping to license the SmartQuill concept to interested hardware manufacturers, and believes a product will be on shelves within two years, Collins said. The price tag could hover around 200 pounds sterling -- $340 or more -- but no pricing has been set as of yet, he said. At the moment, SmartQuill works best when users write in capital letters, but BT Labs is working on improving the handwriting recognition software and expects it to understand cursive by next year. In the future, Collins predicts there will be whole range of SmartQuill pens -- everything from a high-end model for executives to a basic one for kids to use in school.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES

With the help of smart note taker we can write notes on any surface
even in air. That is we can write notes any time with using a paper.so
we getinformation in very fast and easy way.Hence it is time saving.
Smart note taker is releable and powerful.
It is helpful for blinds that think and write freely.
Smart note taker is used for instructors in presentations.
It is used along with paint and JAVA graphics so we can say this
product is compatible with all graphics software.
Easy-to-use wireless connection.
Drawer (Contents outline, library, history).

DISADVANTAGES

The only disadvantages of smart note taker is high cost.Companies
had succeeded to make similar products and put them in the
market. Putting a newly invented, innovative product in the market is
not easy. The prices in the market must be well observed for similar
products. The prices of 2-D digital pens are about 50 dollars to 90
dollars. So the price of smart note taker will be high . But this
disadvantage definitly be eliminated in near future.

CONCLUSION

The system will try to improve a pen, which helps people get rid of typing problems on computer by the technology, which converts your handwriting to text format on your PC. However, the technology provides opportunity to write on air, which means it, needs no any item to convert the typing to your computer such as 3D view. Beside this, it can also be used like all other classical pens. Therefore, this device will increase the capacity of noting the texts, lessons and projects you work on. One other fact that appears is similar products generally works in a way that they store the writing by memory systems and direct the data to computer. We will vanish this time lag by using a technology that the data will be sent to PC directly not by stored. It is sure it will be hard to eliminate the other products as our rivals, but our advantage in this market will be the properties of the device, which come to be its high mobility, versatile design and its ideal weight. The device takes a practical extent since it offers high mobility. This property may seem useless at first side but the high mobility will help the teachers or individuals, who have dynamism as they do their jobs, by giving them opportunity to write anywhere. . On the other hand, the price of innovation will be reasonable for the sectors that can use it effectively in their business or lessons.

What is some information on the 'smart note taker'?
In: Internet, Learning Tips [Edit categories]
I went to the "Smart Note Taker" website - it is poorly-written, with
a lot of typographical errors, and thus is not a professional site.
Also, the contact address is a gmail address, which is not a
reputable business email. I'd say this is a case of something that
sounds too good to be true - don't waste money on it.
It seems to be some sort of recording device where you write your
notes with a pen onto your laptop instead of typing - I can't see how
that would be worth the money.
My advice is to learn how to take notes yourself - see the Related
Questions - and then you will be the Smart Note Taker!

How does it work?
Advantages & disadvantages:
Basically, I find myself in need of a snippet keeper.
There are two
primary reasons: (i) I have random bits of information stored in a
multitude of ways so they are not always easy to find; and (ii) for
some books I read, I want a place to take notes in. I started by
re-reading many of Matt's wonderful reviews of snippet keepers and
then trying out the ones that seemed most promising.
<http://db.tidbitsgetbits.acgi?tbser=1196>
I am at the point where the decision is between NoteTaker, NoteBook,
and DEVONthink. I like DEVONthink, but am attracted to the outliner
features of the Note* applications. In Matt's review of NoteTaker, he
mentioned that NoteBook had just been released but he hadn't had time
to try it out. In Adam's review of NoteBook today, he mentioned that
he hasn't used NoteTaker much. I was wondering if anyone has used
both applications and, if so, how they compare.
I'm not asking for a detailed analysis, just wondering if there were
one or two features that make one stand out from the other.
If it's of any interest or use, I am currently leaning towards
NoteBook, because of the following list of advantages and
disadvantages for the two applications (these are subjective as
they're based on what's important to me):
NoteBook
--
Advantages:
-Media frames
-Excellent index with context
-Multiple keywords per item
-Multiple highlighters
-Stickers
-Smart quotes
-Outline styles
Disadvantages:
-No history
-No templates
-No embedded web pages
-Contents stored as binary
-Can't page link to specific cells (only pages)
-No AppleScript
NoteTaker
--
Advantages:
-Embed web pages
-AppleScript
-History
-Templates
-Drawer (Contents outline, library, history)
-Line numbers
Disadvantages:
-Index has no context, not nearly as good as NoteBook's
-Only one keyword per item
-Clipping service requires second click
-Working with pasted graphics is awkward
-Highlighter only works on full cells, doesn't get indexed
-No smart quotes
-Switches to front when using contextual menu in other application
-Can't drag items to other tabs
I think that the first two NoteBook advantages are the most important
for me. I want to be able to find snippets of information easily, so
an effective index is very important. The media frames are just a
good way of managing inserted graphics/PDFs, though I wish they could
also be used with embedded web pages too (currently, NoteBook can't
display web pages). The main other aspect causing me to prefer
NoteBook is that I find its method of entering text and moving about
better -- I can't really describe why, though, in the details I just
prefer it. Based on the release notes, they also seem to be
attempting to match MORE's outline features (though there is still no
clone capability).
How do you take good notes in class?
In: Learning Tips [Edit categories]
Taking Good Notes
One major thing is being prepared. Having something to write with and
some paper to write on. Being prepared also means that you have read
the material in advance. Reading the material helps you determine
what information is more important.
Make sure you pay attention! You cannot take good notes if you cannot
focus on what you are taking notes on. Your teacher will be
emphasizing different information, and you really want to notice
that. Usually the teacher will emphasize what they think is
important. What they think is important is more likely to be on the
test.
If you are having a hard time paying attention, you need to do
something about it. Are you sitting in the front, middle, or back?
Students in the back are more likely to be distracted or to daydream.
If you want to focus, you should probably sit in the first few rows.
So if you want to move, then ask your teacher (before or after class)
if you can be moved up. If you explain that you are having trouble
focusing and think that sitting close will help, most teachers will
be glad to help you with that.
Here are some tips to taking good notes that will help you understand
your classes better.
Make your notebook an outline of the material - you can even
use the textbook as a guide and write down major topics ahead of time
Write down anything the teacher puts onto the board. If they
think it is important, it probably will be on a quiz or test.
Write down anything the teacher says more than once. If they
repeat something, they think it is important also.
Write down any words that the teacher explains - give
definitions, examples, and any diagrams or drawings that the teacher
uses to explain the terms.
Ask the teacher to explain again if you do not understand
anything, or ask they they write it down so you can copy it into your
notes
Copy any drawings, diagrams, maps, or images the teacher
draws (if it is very complicated, make sure it is in your textbook so
you can study it later, or see if the teacher can make you a copy)
You can also record the lecture (ask the teacher if it is OK first)
and copy notes after class if you can't write quickly enough to keep
up. In this case, you should listen carefully to the lecture and see
how much you can understand before you write the notes.
Organized Note-Taking Systems
There are a variety of different systems for taking notes - here's
some information on how to do each one! Click on the Link at the end
for more complete examples of each
The Charting Method - this is a way of taking notes for a
confusing lecture which involves a lot of relationships, dialogue,
comparisons and other connections between a lot of different areas.
Make you paper into a set of columns with the main topics to be
covered in your lecture written at the top of the sheet. As the
teacher covers each fact, write it into the correct column. This is a
good method if you have a lot of information and not a lot of time to
write, but you have to know what topics are going to be covered ahead
of time, so that you can make your columns.
The Cornell Method - this is a way of adding extra
information and "clues" to your notes without recopying the whole
thing. Basically, you just leave a huge blank margin on the left or
right side of your page, then add cues, hints, and extra information
in the blank spaces. When you study, you can cover up your notes and
just look at the cues in the margin to see if you know the material.
The Outline Method - this is the one I usually recommend; it
is a way of showing main facts and how they are related to one
another. You can do a formal outline - the kind with numbers,
letters, etc. - or just use the indented areas to show what goes
underneath what category. The major points or most important facts
will be listed further toward the left-hand side of the page.
Information which explains these facts, defines terms, or otherwise
supports the main points will be listed underneath them and indented
toward the right. This is a good way to make your notebook because
all you have to do to study is read each point as a question. The
only problem with using an outline would be if you have a teacher who
covers a lot of information very quickly so that it's hard for you to
keep up; in that case, use another method during their class or ask
for a written outline to keep in your notes.
The Mapping Method - this is a visual method of taking notes,
and involves making a map or diagram showing how all the information
is connected. It is a good way to keep up with a teacher who covers
lots of information, or when you don't know exactly what the lecture
will be about (such as a guest speaker). Instead of taking detailed
notes, you just jot down the main points. Then, you draw lines
connecting facts or details; show connections with arrows; circle
important information; or any other visual way you want to remind
yourself of the lecture and the information you learned. This method
works best if you use it as a rough-draft, then recopy the
information into an outline or list afterword for easier studying.
The Sentence Method - this is another way of handling a
lecture with a lot of information. You just copy down the important
information as the teacher speaks, writing each fact on a new line -
you do not actually have to write complete sentences so long as you
get the important information down. The best way to use this method
is as a rough draft, because you have trouble reading through the
mass of sentences later on when studying - use this method to get the
information, then recopy it into an outline so that it makes more
sense and is easier to study.

SMART NOTE TAKER
take notes intelligently..
ABSTRACT:
The Smart NoteTaker is such a helpful product that satisfies the
needs of the people in today's technologic and fast life. This
product can be used in many ways. The Smart NoteTaker provides taking
fast and easy notes to people who are busy one's self with something.
With the help of Smart NoteTaker, people will be able to write notes
on the air, while being busy with their work. The written note will
be stored on the memory chip of the pen, and will be able to read in
digital medium after the job has done. This will save time and
facilitate life.
The Smart NoteTaker is good and helpful for blinds that think and
write freely. Another place, where our product can play an important
role, is where two people talks on the phone. The subscribers are
apart from each other while their talk, and they may want to use
figures or texts to understand themselves better. It's also useful
especially for instructors in presentations. The instructors may not
want to present the lecture in front of the board. The drawn figure
can be processed and directly sent to the server computer in the
room. The server computer then can broadcast the drawn shape through
network to all of the computers which are present in the room. By
this way, the lectures are aimed to be more efficient and fun. This
product will be simple but powerful. The product will be able to
sense 3D shapes and motions that user tries to draw. The sensed
information will be processed and transferred to the memory chip and
then will be monitored on the display device. The drawn shape then
can be broadcasted to the network or sent to a mobile device.
There will be an additional feature of the product which will monitor
the notes, which were taken before, on the application program used
in the computer. This application program can be a word document or
an image file. Then, the sensed figures that were drawn onto the air
will be recognized and by the help of the software program we will
write, the desired character will be printed in the word document. If
the application program is a paint related program, then the most
similar shape will be chosen by the program and then will be printed
on the screen.
Since, JAVA Applet is suitable for both the drawings and strings, all
these applications can be put together by developing a single JAVA
program. The JAVA code that we will develop will also be installed on
the pen so that the processor inside the pen will type and draw the
desired shape or text on the display panel.

Smart note taker

Smart note taker is a very useful product that could satisfy the needs of people in today s technological and fast life. This product can be used in many ways. Features of smart note taker:
1) The smart note taker is good and helpful for blinds that think and write freely.
2)Another place, where our product can play an important role is where two people talk on the phone. The subscribers
are apart from each other while their talk, and they may want to use figures or texts to understand themselves better.
3)It s also useful especially for instructors in presentations. the instructors may not want to present the lecture in front of the board. The drawn figure can be processed and directly sent to the server computer in the room. The server computer then can broadcast the drawn shape through network to all of the computers which are present in the room. By this way lectures are aimed to be more efficient and fun.

Working:

This product will be simple but powerful. The product will be able to sense 3D shapes and motions that user tries to draw. The sensed information will be processed and transferred to the memory chip and then will be monitored on the display device. The drawn shape then can be broadcasted to the network or sent to a mobile device.
There will be an additional feature of the product that will monitor the notes, which were taken before, on the application program used in the computer. This application program can be a word document or an image file. Then, the sensed that were drawn into the air will be recognized and with the help of the software program software we will write the desired character will be printed in the word document. If the application program is a paint related program, then the most similar shape will be chosen by the program and then will be printed on screen.
Construction:
Since, JAVA applet is suitable for both the drawings and strings, all these applications can be put [together by developing a single JAVA applet program. The java code that we will develop will also be installed on the pen so that the processor in the pen will be able to draw and type the desired text on the display panel.
Applet:
Applet is a function of java which for example, is a kind of container(file) which contains a set of programs made in java. It is widely used in making various applications based on java. It is one of the best features of java.
The various strings, drawings etc Will be made using a class file and this file will not be a single file. It will be a set of files linked together in a single applet program.
Database:
The system installed in the pen will consist of a database which will help the processor to recognize various words made visually in the air.
Each word written in the air will resemble to a word in the database and the word present in the database will be printed. This will remain the basic principle of the working of a smart note taker.
Conclusion:
Hence we can conclude that our product has many advantages over digital pen , since the smart note taker is a device that can store visual recordings and thus can be used widely.

Overhead projectors, digital projectors, whiteboards and chalkboards are often used to convey information in educational environments, such as classrooms. However, these visual display methods are not inherently accessible to individuals who are legally blind, and may put them at a disadvantage, compared to their peers.
Several methods have been proposed to make classroompresentations more accessible to students who are legallyblind. For example, lectures might be recorded (for laterreview) or a human note-taker might be hired to take notes, which are then provided to the student. However, theseapproaches do not engage students who are legally blind inthe process of understanding and participating in classroompresentations, and might even encourage them to skip class.
To improve accessibility of classroom lectures for studentswho are legally blind, and to encourage them to take notes,we have developed the Note-Taker. This device requires noexisting infrastructure or prior setup in a classroom, and doesnot require the lecturer to adjust the presentation. However,it makes classroom presentations accessible to many studentswho are legally blind.
In developing the Note-Taker, we investigated the usabilityand the shortcomings of current assistive technologies thatmight be used by students who are legally blind in theclassroom (Sections 3 and 4). Based on these findings, weprototyped a solution that addressed these shortcomings(Section 5), and conducted two case studies (Section 6). Inthe first case study, the first author (who is himself legallyblind) used the Note-Taker for an entire semester; in thesecond case study, another student (who is also legally blind)used a second Note-Taker prototype in classes for one month.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The Note-Taker project was born out of necessity when the first author, David, found that traditional methods of note taking were proving unsuccessful. In his own words,
Before senior-level math, I aced college by keeping up with note-taking in lectures as best I could. For some classes, mostly math, it was necessary that I spent extra time in the textbook or reading third-party material, but I always managed to get the grade. Senior-level math was like a slap in the face. Quite suddenly I had no way of keeping up with note-taking, but needed to. We d fill the boards up half a dozen times proving lemmas and theorems that relied on those lemmas. I routinely got lost in the theorem proofs because in one case, I d opt not to take notes (and thusforget the lemma by the time of the theorem) or I d opt to take notes, which entailed such a frantic pace that the lecture was essentially useless. In either case, I wasn t getting the intuition behind the proofs that the lecture was so importantly attempting to provide. Having had all of high school and most of college to tryout the various classroom assistive technologies, I knew that nothing off-the-shelf was going to fix my problem. That s when I approached the lab and started bouncing ideas around.
Through a series of brainstorming exercises, discussions and informal experiments, we found that David s problems stemmed from one primary issue: As he used a monocular to view the board at the front of the classroom, there was a delay each time David switched from viewing the board to his notes, or from his notes back to the board. These delays stemmed from sitting up to see the board and then hunchingdown to within a few inches from his notes on the desktop. David especially lost time when trying to use his monocular to find and return to the relevant spot on the chalkboard (or whiteboard) at the front of the classroom. Over time, these Board-Note-Board (BNB) delays accumulated to the point that David was unable to keep pace with the lecture. Here is how David described the situation:
Going from notes to the board was the big problem. I would say it was akin to finding Waldo while limitingyour view to a square inch of the page. What I needed was something that allowed me to view the board and my notes near-simultaneously, like a fully-sighted student. Then I d stand a chance at keeping up with the lecture.
A related problem was that David s monocular of choice, theOcutech [2], provided only a fixed 6X zoom. Thissometimes proved insufficient in classes where the board wasfilled multiple times, since his professors were writingsmaller than he was accustomed to. Particularly when Davidused his Ocutech to try to keep up with notes, he frequentlygot eyestrain headaches that limited his subsequent ability toread sometimes for up to 12 hours after the class. Despite athorough literature survey and product review, we found nosolution to be satisfactory, so set out to create our own.

Livescribe, the maker of various smart pens, has just launched its line of products in Canada. We laid our hands on the top-of-the-line 8GB Echo ($219.99) and here are our initial thoughts on the ambitious product.

While the Livescribe Echo pen does deliver on its promise, the best feature of this pricey product is an add-on app that costs an extra $30.
We ll get to that in a moment but first, a word on what it is and what it gets right.
Slightly thicker than a regular ink-tip pen, the black Livescribe Echo records everything it writes or hears. With the former, whatever you write or draw on special lined paper (50-sheet Starter Notebook included) is remembered by the pen, which is then digitally transferred to your PC or Mac when connected via the bundled micro USB cable. In other words, once synchronized, what you see written on the paper will be identical to the digital pages on your computer.
A tiny camera at the base of the pen, near the ink tip, reads the microdots that line the paper barely visible to the human eye which is what tracks everything you write down. Plus, these notebooks have other functions at the front and back, such as a calculator, time and date, battery life and other info you can touch with the pen and then hear and/or read on its OLED screen.
Thanks to the pen s built-in microphone and memory, it can also record when it hears, be it your own words, a boardroom meeting, a nearby teacher or professor, and so on. Simply tap the record icon at the bottom of each page to begin the recording. There are also icons to playback audio it has recorded, plus you can jump to different tracks and even adjust playback speed. So when you re flipping back a few pages to read some notes, when you tap to hear audio it ll be what was recorded when you were on this exact page.
The audio is surprisingly clear given how small this device is, which you can hear through the pen s speaker or with headphones for private listening (not included).
You can also record audio without the special paper by pressing and holding the power button on the pen.
While the downloadable Livescribe Desktop software is supposed to let you print notepads with those necessary microdots, I received an error message when I tried to print it off a few sheets (and no, it wasn t my printer). Too bad. Also from this desktop program you can share notes with others, be they written pages or audio recordings.
Even more annoying, however, is the fact your handwritten notes are not transcribed into text for a word processing document. This very handy feature is found in cheaper smartpen products that debuted in the past, such as Logitech s io2 digital pen ($150) and Leapfrog s Fly Fusion Pen for kids ($80). Instead, you must buy the MyScript app for $30 app from the Livescribe Application Store. I m sorry, but this is nickel-and-diming it, as a $220 pen should have this feature built-in.
Other optional apps include language translators, dictionaries, games, and more.
Except for the fact dotted pages weren t printable, the Livescribe Echo pen worked as promised. A gadget like this could help students and professionals stay organized while taking notes, be they handwritten or recorded. But there s no question the MyScript app should be included given the relatively steep price for the product.
Available exclusively at Future Shop, there s also a 4GB Echo smartpen for $189.99 and a 2GB Pulse smartpen for $149.99, along with accessories such as dotted paper, pen tips, and more.
Sync readers, have you tried out the Livescribe product or any other smart pens ?
