JATROPHA – THE FUEL FOR THE FUTURE full report
#1

[attachment=2023]

ABSTRACT
Biodiesel is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be used in unmodified diesel engines with the current fuelling infrastructure. It is safe, biodegradable, and reduces serious air pollutants such as soot, particulates, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and air toxics. Performance, storage requirements, and maintenance are similar for Biodiesel blend fuels and petroleum diesel .In India, Jatropha is found to have favorable conditions for growth. Its advent is going to prove very beneficial for the Indian as well as the world market even as fossil fuel's demand goes on becoming indirectly proportional to its availability.
The only draw back in using jatropha oil as fuel is that, the NOX emission is more than that of the petroleum diesel. Our project deals with the implementation of EGR to reduce the emission of NOX and to study its characteristics with respect to the performance of the engine.
Our project involves the following process 1) The Trans-Esterification process, 2) Program was developed using Visual Basic for caring out all the performance and volumetric test, 3) Engine modification for EGR was made,4) The performance tests and the heat balance tests have been carried out to compare the various blends and their performance with each other with was carried out for the following
Without any engine modification.
With implementation of EGR.
5) A comparison study between the performance of the various blends and the emission with EGR and without EGR is also presented.
Comparative performance of diesel engine was conducted using:
Diesel oil (HSD)
Blends of HSD and Bio diesel from Jatropha curcas (25% BD, 50% BD,75%BD)
Hundred percent bio diesel
So as a result of our project the emission of NOX came down drastically. The emission was reduced to 0.5% of original emission using Biodiesel and with petroleum diesel.
