RENEWABLE ELECTRIC ENERGY SOURCES

[attachment=15933]

Renewable Energy

What is renewable energy?
What forms does it take?
Why is it needed?
Targets exist for renewable energy to generate 10% of electricity by 2010 and 20% by 2020!
Can these be achieved?
What forms of renewable energy will deliver these targets?

TIDAL POWER

The difference in potential energy during high tide and low tide is the tidal energy .
The potential energy of tides is estimated at 3*10^6MW
Tide occurs due to the attractions of sea water by the moon
At high tide reservoir of water is created which is allowed to ebb through turbines located in dam.
Expensive construction.

Wind Power

Each wind turbine can produce between 1/4 and 2 MW of electrical power.
Wind farm needs to be located where there is a relatively high average wind speed.
A 100% efficient aero generator would be able to convert up to maximum of around 60% of
The available energy in the into mechanical energy.
Advantages?
Disadvantages?

Geothermal Energy

The earth s interior is made of hot fluid called magma.
The outer crust of the earth has an average thickness of 32 KM and bellow that is the magma.
Molten magma also contains water which it releases in the form of steam which could be utalized for electric power generation.

Wave Power

It has been observed that a typical wave measures 2 to 3 meters in height through out year .
The energy per sq mt of wave surface area is given as dga^2.
If the length of the coastline is , say 1200km , the power available is around 84GW.
