ABOUT THE STUDY

The concept of labour welfare has a very wide coverage. First and foremost the entire industrial atmosphere should be conducive to increasing labour productivity which is an indispensable manifestation and ingredient of economic -development. Increased labour productivity however, should not mean that the same is fully appropriated by the employers. There ought to be a judicious sharing of the economic surplus which labour generates. No Policy of labour welfare and no measures related to it have any meaning unless the workers feel satisfied with their earnings and working conditions. It is only in that situation that economic prosperity can generate a corresponding realization of satisfaction by the members of the society. The totality of labour relations should be such that the workers should be able to live his life with dignity. The international labour organization, in 1949 had defined labour welfare" to mean as services, facilities and amenities as may be established in or in the vicinity of undertaking to enable the persons employed there in to perform their work in healthy and congenial surroundings.
In the constitution of India the ideals of India as a welfare state are embedded in the directive principles of state policy. The ideals enunciated in the constitution are sufficient to make India a welfare State. The relevant articles are
