Tata Group is an Indian multinational conglomerate based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It covers seven business sectors: communications and information technology, engineering, materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals. Tata Group has operations in more than 80 countries on six continents and its companies export products and services to 80 nations. It has more than 100 companies operating each of them operates independently of them 31 are publicly listed. Tata's main companies are Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Global Beverages, Tata Teleservices, Titan, Tata Communications and Taj Hotels. The combined market capitalization of all 31 Tata listed companies was $ 76.76 billion as of July 2012. Tata receives more than 58% of its revenues from outside India.
The group takes the name of its founder, Jamsetji Tata, a member of whose family almost invariably has been the president of the group. The current chairman of the Tata group is Rattan Tata, who took over J. R. D. Tata in 1991. The company is currently in its fifth generation of family management. Tata Sons is the promoter of all key Tata companies and has the largest share of these companies. The president of Tata Sons has traditionally been the president of the Tata group. About 66% of the capital stock of Tata Sons is in the hands of philanthropic trusts endowed by members of the Tata family.
The 2009 Reputation Institute's annual survey ranked the Tata Group as the eleventh most reputable company in the world. The survey included 600 global companies. The Tata Group has helped establish and fund numerous quality research, education and culture institutes in India. The group received the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2007 in recognition of its long history of philanthropic activities.
