Cranes are used in many industries to move heavy and oversized objects that other methods of material handling can not. These cranes have a railed support structure, also known as a bridge, and a wheeled truck traveling across the bridge horizontally. The use of cranes in the works to lift heavy equipment, construction materials, protection systems, steel erected, etc. Is inherently dangerous. It is expected that all parties who are responsible for the use of cranes while working at Princeton University comply with Subpart CC of 29 CFR 1926 1400 (and others) as the standard pertains to their work.
Responsibility for compliance with the standard in its entirety lies with the individual crane contractor as long as it is dictated by the standard. The following sections provide crane standard extracts and highlights as well as general guidelines and procedures for the use and operation of the crane at the Princeton University campus. The procedures in these sections ensure that employees understand the training, operation and maintenance practices of the crane and derrick. These requirements are also designed to ensure that procedures are in place to protect the health and safety of all employees. Cylinders and lifting accessories such as slings must have adequate strength, tested and subject to the required examinations and inspections. All crane operators and persons involved in the loading of slings and in the direction of lifting operations must be trained and competent.
