Safety and Design Technical Services Team

PRODUCTS & SERVICES
The FHWA Resource Center offers a variety of
technical assistance and training opportunities for
agencies addressing the crashes that result from
road departure. Examples of how the Resource
Center Safety & Design Technical Service Team
(TST) has assisted Divisions include:
Bringing new solutions to old problems
with the deployment of some of the latest
research for roadside safety issues and
safety hardware.
Reviewing and offering comments on design standards and special designs for
safety hardware.
Assisting with an approach to road departure strategic plans.
Performing process reviews for safety hardware or improving safety in the
resurfacing process.
Helping Divisions and their State DOT partners
to developing procedures and guidelines for
improving safety in the design process.
Delivering NHI training courses for addressing
roadside safety.
Transportation professionals seeking training or
assistance with a roadside design project may contact
the Resource Center Safety & Design TST.
AASHTO Roadside Design Guide (NHI course 380032)
This course provides an overview of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide. Emphasis is
on current highway agency policies and practices. Each student will receive a copy of
the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide as the course text.
Design, Construction, and Maintenance of Highway Safety Appurtenances and
Features
(NHI course 380034)
2 or 3 day course available
The course covers the design, construction, and maintenance of highway safety
appurtenances and features. Attendees will learn about the purpose and performance
requirements of state-of-the-art highway safety features, such as breakaway sign
supports, breakaway utility poles, traffic barriers, impact attenuators, traversable terrain,
and hardware features such as drainage inlets. The course describes how these
features function, what can go wrong, and how to recognize and correct improper
installations.

New Courses:
Beginning in late 2006, there will be additional NHI training courses available for
Roadside Safety Analysis Program (RSAP) and GRIT (Guardrail Installer Training).
