DIGITAL PEN: HOW IT WORKS?
Two components
1. A special pen with a digital
camera components
Inside.
2.Unique, nearly invisible dotpattern
printed on regular
paper via laser desktop or
commercial offset.
GOALS AND RESTRICTIONS
Handheld computers and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant) are very popular nowadays.
The way to input texts to handheld computers varies, but most of them demand the user to write special characters, corresponding to letters, numbers, etc., on the display with a stylus.
One of the main objectives was to develop a simple demo application for a PDA to show that it is possible to integrate the Anoto technology with PDAs.
HOW BLUETOOTH WORKS
The interaction between an Anoto pen and a PDA is a point-to-point connection, and uses two devices-slave,master.
ADVANTAGES:
Ease of use
Mobile solution
No change to current data capture workflow
Manageable cost
Quickly get data into the back-end with great accuracy
No lost handwritten documents
DISADVANTAGES
The current implementation saves the note twice as two bitmaps with different sizes.
Saving only one bitmap seemed to be a small problem since there are no functions in Palm OS that makes drawing a bitmap in a customized size possible.
The low display resolution of Palm V does not allow grayscale bitmaps.
CONCLUSION
This master s thesis aimed to show an alternative way to input to PDAs using the Anoto technology with pen and paper.
Supports Bluetooth communication, since the Anoto pen communicates via Bluetooth.
