Internet radio
Internet radio is a broadcasting service transmitted via the Internet. Not every internet "radio station" has a corresponding traditional radio station. Many internet radio stations are completely independent from traditional ("terrestrial") radio stations and broadcast only on the Internet. Broadcasting on the Internet is usually referred to as webcasting since it is not trasmitted broadly through wireless means but is delivered over the World Wide Web. e-Radio suggests a streaming media that presents listeners with a continuous stream of audio to which they have no control much like traditional broadcast media. It is not synonymous with podcasting which involves downloading and therefore copyright issues. Nor does e-Radio suggest "on-demand" file servering.

Because the radio signal is relayed over the Internet, it is possible to access the stations from anywhere in the world for example, to listen to an Australian radio station from Europe or America. This makes it a popular service for expatriates and for people who have interests that may not be adequately catered for by their local radio stations . Some of the internet radio services offer news, sports, talkback, and various genres of music everything that is on the radio station being simulcast over the internet with a netcast stream.

Implementation
Internet Radio need a specially designed webserver SHOUTcast. SHOUTcast is a multiplatform freeware audio streaming technology, developed by Nullsoft. SHOUTcast uses MP3 or AAC encoding of audio content and HTTP (though multicast can be used) as the transport protocol to broadcast web radio, also known as Internet radio. Both servers and clients are available for Windows, FreeBSD, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris.

SHOUTcast software allows users to set up their own Internet radio servers using provided software. The output format is supported by multiple clients including the widely popular Nullsoft Winamp, XMMS, Zinf and Apple iTunes. Using the software, users may set up radio servers for their own needs. Current uses include listening to music, watching video and listening to live events.

The most common use of SHOUTcast is for Internet broadcasting. Using SHOUTcast it is possible to cheaply set up an Internet broadcasting station, allowing hobbyists to set up their own broadcasting distribution network for a fraction of the cost of a traditional AM broadcasting or FM radio station. Traditional radio stations also use SHOUTcast to extend their presence onto the Web.

Internet radio
Internet radio is also variously known as web radio, net radio, streaming radio and e-radio is basically an audio service via the internet. webcasting is the name given to the broadcasting of music via the internet. At an estimated 967
hours per year per person, the use of radio is nearly 6 times as that of the newspaper. In the internet radio, a continuous stream of audio that cannot be paused or replayed is delivered to the customers in the form of streaming media. The providers of internet radio service is also associated with traditional radio station or radio network.

Internet radio technology
Streaming:The streaming is used for the voice distribution over the internet with the use of a lossy audio codec. The common formats used are MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Windows Media Audio, RealAudio etc. The data is continuously sent as TCP or UDP packets and are reassembled at the destination.

Simulation: This uses a tuner simulation program which can provide all the online radios that can be recieved in that particular city.

Types of broadcasters:
There are two kinds of Internet radio broadcasters: those who create programming solely for distribution over the Internet, and those who already distribute programming via traditional broadcast spectrum and are also delivering that content online. The latter has the advantage that they can take care of the competition by choosing the internet as an alternate medium for the transmission. .

Abstract

Internet radio (also known as web radio, net radio, streaming radio and e-radio) is an audio service transmitted via the Internet. Music streaming on the Internet is usually referred to as webcasting since it is not transmitted broadly through wireless means.
Internet radio involves streaming media, presenting listeners with a continuous stream of audio that cannot be paused or replayed, much like traditional broadcast media; in this respect, it is distinct from on-demand file serving. Internet radio is also distinct from podcasting, which involves downloading rather than streaming. Many Internet radio services are associated with a corresponding traditional (terrestrial) radio station or radio network. Internet-only radio stations are independent of such associations.
Internet radio services are usually accessible from anywhere in the world for example, one could listen to an Australian station from Europe or America. Some major networks like Clear Channel and CBS Radio in the US, and Chrysalis in the UK restrict listening to in country because of music licensing and advertising concerns.[citation needed] Internet radio remains popular among expatriates and listeners with interests that are often not adequately served by local radio stations (such as eurodance, progressive rock, ambient music, folk music, classical music, and stand-up comedy). Internet radio services offer news, sports, talk, and various genres of music every format that is available on traditional radio stations.
