Route Optimization in Mobile IP

Abstract
Widespread use of portable computers and wireless devices guided the way to the necessity for continuous mobility of Internet. Thus, the introduction of Mobile IP came into adoption. However, the introduction of MIP brought along with it new security issues and attacks. In this report the main discussion is about Route Optimization in Mobile IP. The discussion also looks over the upcoming of mobile IP to provide mobile Internet users with continuous uninterrupted connection. The study investigates the problems on adding mobility to TCP/IP. The first Mobile IP considered is the MIPv4, its working and its drawbacks concerning routing and signaling of packets. Later the discussion continues through the motivation for standardizing MIPv6 as the Mobile IP. The discussion sees that Route Optimization is the main concern of motivation for MIPv6. The report then scans through what Route Optimization is and how it eliminates triangular routing or bi-directional tunneling and its hazards in MIPv4. On continuing, analysis persuades that the introduction of MIPv6 not only brings with it advantages but also gives rise to new security issues and threats or attacks. The threat is divided into two- session hijacking and malicious mobile node coding. The progression is then through the various security designs proposed by the IETF. The study then goes through the introduction of new protocols like Return Routability protocol (RR) and the need for quick expiration of Bindings. The report is then a digestion of the use of Binding Cache and Binding Update messages and the need to authorize and authenticate them.
