Abstract
Spherodized graphite iron or SG iron is another name for the common ductile iron. The peculiarity of this kind of iron is that it contains more than 3% carbon and has graphite present in compact, spherical shapes. higher strength and toughness is resulted as a result of the compact spheroids hampering the continuity of the structure. The SG iron has mechanical properties that is superior to all other cast irons and which can be compared to steels. Thus ductile iron is used in numerous industrial applications.
The elements like Si, Mn, Cu and Ni are the predominant ones in the Alloying element. tensile strength and hardness is improved by the presence of iron, the the U.T.S is enhanced by the Ni. Thus the the end
properties of SG iron are determined by the presence of Cu and Ni.
