A slam book is a notebook (commonly the type of spiral-bound) that is passed between children and teenagers. The book keeper begins by asking a question (which can be on any topic) and the book is then passed for each contributor to complete their own answer to the question.
Slam books were also a source of intimidation among students - where students "lived in fear" of "biting comments" written anonymously under their names, "in the order of what today might be a Tweet or a comment from Facebook".
