optical measurement technique has become increasingly common for the past few years. In particular, the technique of optical fibre is often used to detect the spread of the flames. With optical sensors ignition process can be studied with a temporal and spatial resolution. An optical sensor in the cylinder was developed and tested to analyze ignition of the mixture and the light emission of combustion gases. The sensor consists of eight optical sensors mounted in a conventional spark plug.
The results show a good correlation between the measurement of brightness and combustion parameters such as the load, the speed of the engine, the ignition timing and air-fuel mixture ratio. A correlation between the development of the luminous intensity and the pressure was found. For the assessment of light signals of different methods of analysis are presented.
In addition, it is shown that the brightness of the flame can be used to control the combustion process. With the detected light signals it was possible to optimize the timing of the firing in respect to the high performance of the engine.
