A vernier scale is a device that allows the user to measure more accurately what could be done without help by reading a uniformly divided rectilinear or circular measurement scale. It is a scale that indicates where the measurement is between two of the marks on the main scale. Tracks are common in sextants used in navigation, scientific instruments used to perform experiments, machinists' measuring instruments (all types, but especially calipers and micrometers) used to work materials at fine tolerances, in theodolites used in Topography and in absolute linear encoders, linear or rotational.
