What is a bus?
Communication pathway connecting two or more devices
Typical desktop PC has two main buses:
1)System bus or Local bus - connects CPU and memory
- fastest bus
2)PCI bus -connects hard-disks , sound cards
-slower bus
PCI BUS
Parallel bus
Developed by Intel in 1992
Interconnects chips,expansion boards and processor memory subsystems
5 volt, 33MHz, 32-bit bus with a basic data transfer rate of 133 Mb/s

Compact peripheral component interconnect (CPCI) is an adaptation of the peripheral component interconnect (PCI) specification for industrial computer applications requiring a smaller, more robust mechanical form factor than the one defined for the desktop. CompactPCI is an open standard supported by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturer s Group (PICMG). CompactPCI
A CompactPCI (cPCI) system is a 3U or 6U Eurocard-based industrial computer, where all boards are connected via a passive PCI backplane. The PICMG (PCI Industrial Computers Manufacturers Group) US and PICMG Europe organizations have standardised the connector pin assignments . The connectors and the electrical rules allow for 8 boards in a PCI segment. Multiple segments are allowed with bridges.Hot-plugging is a supported feature of CompactPCI.
