Liquefaction is a physical process that takes place during some earthquakes that may lead to ground failure. As a consequence of liquefaction, soft, young, water-saturated, well sorted, fine grain sands and silts behave as viscous fluids rather than solids.

Soil liquefaction describes a phenomenon in which a saturated or partially saturated soil loses substantially resistance and rigidity in response to applied stress, usually seismic agitation or other sudden change in the stress condition, causing it to behave like a liquid.
