Strength:
The aggregates should be strong to withstand the stresses due to traffic wheel load.
Aggregates used in top layers of pavements I.e. wearing course have to be capable of
withstanding high stresses in addition to wear and tear hence should posses resistance to
crushing.
Hardness
The aggregate used in surface course are subjected to constant rubbing or abrasion due to
moving traffic.
They should be hard enough the wear due to abrasive action of traffic.

Results of a 2-yr study of cause-effect relationships involved in roughness of concrete pavements are reported. Water-cement ratio is detrimental for concrete. We always try to restrict the water-cement ratio in order to achieve higher strength. The chemical reaction of cement with water requires a water-cement ratio of less than 0.38, whereas the adopted water-cement ratio is much more than that mainly because of the requirement of workability.
