ABSTRACT
Thermo acoustic have been known for over years but the use of this phenomenon to develop engines and pumps is fairly recent. Thermo acoustic refrigeration is one such phenomenon that uses high intensity sound waves in a pressurized gas tube to pump heat from one place to other to produce refrigeration effect. In this type of refrigeration all sorts of conventional refrigerants are eliminated and sound waves take their place. All we need is a loud speaker and an acoustically insulated tube. Thermoacoustic Refrigeration
How it works
Moving coil Loudspeaker
Inside 2 magnets with metal coil between them, current is induced causing coil to move
Creates sound waves up to 200 dB!
Resonator where gas cooling and compression take place
Uses inert gas, commonly Helium
Stack
Series of small parallel channels through which pressure and velocity of waves change
In between the heat exchangers
Heat Exchangers
Hot heat exchanger to remove excess heat

This project was undertaken at the penn state uty. thermoacoustic refrigeration at high amplitudes has married a high power acoustic driver (up to 100 W of acoustic power) to the resonator of the STAR(The Space Thermoacoustic Refrigerator) refrigerator
Overview of the device
The STAR has the ability to move about 5 Watts of heat and exhibited a peak coefficient of performance relative to Carnot about 20%.
