Interlinking or networking of rivers entails construction of dams and canals and other connected hydraulic engineering works for mass transfer of water across river basins. Basically, the scheme is to convey floodwater in the Ganga and Brahmaputra river basins to the arid and semi-arid areas of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, and to the peninsular rivers of south India. Brief History Of The Project

In 1972 the then Minister for Irrigation K. L. Rao proposed a 2640 kilometer long page link between the Ganges and Cauvery rivers.

In 1974 plans were proposed for the Garland canal.

In 1982 the National Water Development Agency was set up to carry out surveys of the links and prepare feasibility studies.

The inter-linking of rivers was touted as one of the flagship programmes by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
