Position Sensorless Control of Switched Reluctance Generator for Wind Energy Conversion

Abstract
This paper presents a novel sensorless control system of switched reluctance generator (SRG) in order to reduce cost, simplify system structure and increase reliability. Considering nonlinear characteristics of SRG and robustness of sliding mode observer (SMO), sensorless control method of SRG based on SMO is proposed and analyzed. This document presents a four-quadrant controller for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives with optimal ignition and turning angles for each operating quadrant. Trigger angles are chosen to maximize the average torque produced by the motor, which requires optimizing the area of the power conversion loop. The switched reluctance motor (SRM) is a type of a stepper motor, an electric motor that runs by reluctance torque. Unlike common DC motor types, power is delivered to windings in the stator (case) rather than the rotor. This greatly simplifies mechanical design as power does not have to be delivered to a moving part, but it complicates the electrical design as some sort of switching system needs to be used to deliver power to the different windings.
