A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) or an integrated optical circuit is a device that integrates multiple (at least two) photonic functions and, as such, is similar to an electronic integrated circuit. A SONOS memory cell is formed from a standard polysilicon NMOS transistor with the addition of a small sliver of silicon nitride inserted inside the transistor's gate oxide.
