SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
SNMP Overview
Define mechanism for remote management of network devices (routers, bridges, etc.)
Fundamental principle: all device management done by simple variable value manipulation
Approach:
standard means for specifying quantities recognized by devices
protocol for requesting, returning, notifying of changes of values

Network-Monitoring using SNMP
The SNMP is used for the Management-Network protocol. It can be combined with the network monitoring tool ntop. Disturbances develop in the networks due to the Errors in hardware-, software- or con guration, Unauthorized or unforeseen overwhelming usage, or Bad design and bad scalability. This can be prevented by using continuous monitoring. SNMP is the standard for the networking devices and is a platform independent and open specification.
