Silica fume, also known as microsilica, (CAS number 69012-64-2, EINECS number 273-761-1) is an amorphous (non-crystalline) polymorph of silicon dioxide, silica. It is an ultrafine powder collected as a by-product of the silicon and ferrosilicon alloy production and consists of spherical particles with an average particle diameter of 150 nm. The main field of application is as pozzolanic material for high performance concrete.

It is sometimes confused with fumed silica (also known as pyrogenic silica, CAS number 112945 ....etc

Eleven concrete mixes were used with cement quantities from 140 to 405 kg of cement per m3 and condensed silica fume substitutions varying from 10 to 40%. In spite of the great reactivity of the aggregates, the alkali-aggregate reaction is still under control. SILICA FUME CONCRETE

INTRODUCTION

Silica fume is also referred to as micro silica or condensed silica fume but the term silica fume has been generally accepted
The addition of ultra fine particles in concrete improves strength of concrete
The optimum proportion of silica fume is found in between 20% and 25% by weight of concrete
Silica Fume when react with calcium hydroxide on hydration of cement produces calcium siicate hydrate which has good binding properties.
