This work presents a novel algorithm using color contrast enhancement and lacuna texture synthesis is proposed for the virtual restoration of ancient Chinese paintings. Color contrast enhancement based on saturation and de-saturation is performed in the u'v'Y color space, to change the saturation value in the chromaticity diagram, and adaptive histogram equalization then is adopted to adjust the luminance component. Contrast enhancement of RGB images is done by processing the intensity component. Firstly convert image from RGB to YIQ, so as to be able to isolate the intensity component. Then apply histogram equalization to the intensity component, and convert back to RGB.

Here, the fast image contrast enhancement is achieved based on histogram equalization (HE) both for color images and the gray-level images. A process called Multi-HE is proposed for the gray-level images. In this method, the input image is decomposed into several sub-images and then the classical HE process is applied to each of the sub-images separately. Also two different discrepancy functions are proposed for the purpose of decomposing the input image.
