Twelve to fifteen percentages of transformer failures are caused by winding deformations provoked by the high electrodynamics forces appearing during short circuits. These geometric vibrations lead to an increase of the winding vibration and, consequently, to an increase of the solid insulation mechanical fatigue. ABSTRACT

This paper describes in detail, field experiments performed on a single-phase, distribution transformer to study the behavior of transformer terminal parameters during internal winding faults. A custom-built transformer provided with external taps was used for these tests. The taps were used to stage various internal winding faults in the transformer. Terminal values of voltages and currents were monitored and the results presented. A comparison of these results with simulation results is also presented

Internal winding faults resulting from the degradation of transformer winding insulation can be catastrophic and hence expensive. In the new environment of deregulation, utilities therefore are needing inexpensive methods employed to detect such faults in the incipient stage.
