A new device to help the blind to see has been developed by scientists. The electric lollipop or BrainPort vision device captures images using a small camera and then turns the image into tiny tingles on the tongue. Tingles are sent to the brain, which then turns the tingles into pictures. After a few days of practicing people, who otherwise could not see, they were able to distinguish shapes, read signs and even read letters. This amazing new device can help people to interact with their environment so never before experiences.

A cheap guidance system based on AT89C52 microcontroller is developed for facilitating visually impaired people. Ultrasonic sensors are used to calculate distance of the obstacles around the blind person to guide the user towards the available path. Output is in the form of voice which the blind person can hear e.g., right, left etc. In its advance mode, the system will be able to recognize objects using image processing algorithms. The AT89C52 microcontroller is the heart of the design. Ultrasonic waves are transmitted to the free space and when touched the obstacle is reflected. The reflected waves are received by the receiver. The demodulator is used to process the signal and gives the processed signal to the microcontroller.
