This paper presents Random Early Detection (RED) gateways
for congestion avoidance in packet-switched networks.
The gateway detects incipient congestion by computing
the average queue size. The gateway could notify
connections of congestion either by dropping packets arriving
at the gateway or by setting a bit in packet headers.
When the average queue size exceeds a preset threshold,
the gateway drops or marks each arriving packet with a
certain probability, where the exact probability is a function
of the average queue size.

In computer networking, a packet drop attack or blackhole attack is a type of denial-of-service attack in which a router that is supposed to relay packets instead discards them. This usually occurs from a router becoming compromised from a number of different causes. One cause mentioned in research is through a denial-of-service attack on the router using a known DDoS tool. Because packets are routinely dropped from a lossy network, the packet drop attack is very hard to detect and prevent.
