A logic level MOSFET may be easier. If you are using transistors to interface to the outside world you may find FETs simpler, easier and better!The traditional interfacing 'standard component' has always been the transistor. In fact I use these all the time on the bench but have you considered using a FET switch instead?There are now so called logic FETs switch are ideal for 5V operation because the threshold point is ....etc

the N-channel, Enhancement-mode MOSFET (e-MOSFET) operates using a positive input voltage and has an extremely high input resistance (almost infinite) making it possible to interface with nearly any logic gate or driver capable of producing a positive output. In this paper, a new complementary gate driver for power metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors and in sulated gate bipolar transistors is presented based on the use of a piezoelectric transformer (PT).
