The air-fuel ratio is the proportions by weight of air and gasoline mixed by the carburetor as required for combustion by the engine. This ratio is extremely important for an engine because there are limits to howrich (with more fuel) or how lean (with less fuel) it can be, and still remain fully combustible for efficientfiring. Introduction about IC engines

The operation of the piston engine can best be understood bycomparing it to a simple cannon. In view A of figure 1 on the following page, a cannon barrel, charge of gunpowder, and a cannonball are illustrated. In view B of figure 1, the gunpowder is ignited.
