HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE USING FUMED SILICA

INTRODUCTION
High performance concrete is a concrete having low water binder ratio. A value of 0.4 is suggested as boundary between usual concrete and high performance concrete.
It has high strength and durability. For high durability low permeability is required and to reduce permeability silica fume is used

SILICA FUME CONCRETE

INTRODUCTION

Silica fume is also referred to as micro silica or condensed silica fume but the term silica fume has been generally accepted
The addition of ultra fine particles in concrete improves strength of concrete
The optimum proportion of silica fume is found in between 20% and 25% by weight of concrete
Silica Fume when react with calcium hydroxide on hydration of cement produces calcium siicate hydrate which has good binding properties.

Eleven concrete mixes were used with cement quantities from 140 to 405 kg of cement per m3 and condensed silica fume substitutions varying from 10 to 40%. In spite of the great reactivity of the aggregates, the alkali-aggregate reaction is still under control. It is a by-product of manufacture of silica and ferrosilicon alloys from high purity quartz and coal in a submerged arc electric furnace. It is reported that the addition of ultra fine particle in HPC improves the strength of concrete. The optimum silica fume proportions in between 20% and 25% by weight of concrete. Silica fume, also known as microsilica, (CAS number 69012-64-2, EINECS number 273-761-1) is an amorphous (non-crystalline) polymorph of silicon dioxide, silica. It is an ultrafine powder collected as a by-product of the silicon and ferrosilicon alloy production and consists of spherical particles with an average particle diameter of 150 nm. The main field of application is as pozzolanic material for high performance concrete.
